BUZZ // Bezos-funded rocket is set for lift-off on April 14 with popstar on-board
Katy Perry made history today, blasting into space with Blue Origin’s first all-female crew — a landmark moment more than 60 years after the last female-only mission.
Joining her on the brief suborbital flight were former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, journalist Lauren Sanchez, and film producer Kerianne Flynn. The NS-31 mission launched at 8:30am local time (2:30pm BST) and lasted just over 10 minutes, with about four minutes spent in zero gravity before returning safely to Earth.
Ahead of launch, the team completed astronaut training in Texas. Perry posted snaps of herself and Sanchez in blue flight suits with the caption: “I put the ‘ass’ in astronaut.”
Before takeoff, Perry said the mission was about inspiring young girls and the next generation to break boundaries in STEM. “No limitations,” she told the Associated Press. “I’m excited to learn more about the engineering behind it all.”
Perry also shared some personal “cosmic confirmations,” discovering that the capsule featured a feather design and was named “Tortoise” — both nicknames her mother gave her. “There are no coincidences,” she said. “Something bigger is steering the ship.”
It was Blue Origin’s 11th human flight, funded by Jeff Bezos and designed to make space more accessible. Sanchez described the mission as a celebration of “dreaming big” and praised the women on board as “incredible storytellers.”
With humor, heart, and high altitude, Perry’s journey into space marked a bold step into the final frontier — and a stylish one at that.
